The ridiculous red carpet affair

20 May

In Cannes stars sell movies by posing on the red carpet. Paparazzi stand 15 deep, the back row perched on step ladders; and the ordinary folk on the street shriek in delight as their hero’s walk by. What else do they sell?

Do they sell an impossible dream, an unfulfilled fantasy of impossible perfection to the ordinary rest of us? I can’t help but think that if I was in their position I would get hemorrhoids from having to fake all that smiling and red carpet delight.

If you choose to believe that every person on this earth is of equal intrinsic value then you have to accept that their is something incredibly screwy about the whole red carpet affair. The truth is it works because everybody is in some ways dissatisfied and everybody wants to be somebody else… including those people who walk on the red carpet.
