Ask any great actor what really makes great acting they will invariably reply listening. Traditionally we think of listening as simply something you do with your ears but it is so much more than that…
Listening could be better described as “engagement.” When actors have great chemistry on screen it is really that they are “engaging” with each other.
It is tempting to also think of listening as a short term thing; but real engagement and trust take place in ordinary life when people really listen to each other over a long period of time. Bad listening is pretty much the essence of poor communication.
Often when I am lonely or bored I realize that it is because I haven’t taken the time to listen.
