…Famous Wrong Predictions…

27 Apr

In the world of art & entrepreneurship be encouraged… when it comes to innovation no one really knows  anything…

“Drill for oil? You mean drill into the ground to try and find oil? You’re crazy.”  Opponents to Edwin L Drakes plan to drill for oil in 1849.

“We don’t like their sound, and guitar music is on the way out.” Decca Recording Co. rejecting the Beatles in 1962.

“I’m just glad it’ll be Clark Gable who’s falling on his face not Gary Cooper.”  Gary Cooper on his decision not to take the leading role in “Gone With The Wind.”

“Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?”  H.M. Warner on having talking in movies? Warner Brothers, 1927.

“So we went to Atari and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got this amazing thing, even built with some of your parts, and what do you think about funding us? Or we’ll give it to you. We just want to do it. Pay our salary, we’ll come work for you.’ And they said, ‘No.’ So then we went to Hewlett-Packard, and they said, ‘Hey, we don’t need you. You haven’t got through college yet.’”  Apple Computer Inc. founder Steve Jobs on attempts to get Atari and HP interested in his and Steve Wozniak’s personal computer.

“You’d better learn secretarial skills or else get married.” – Modeling agency, rejecting Marilyn Monroe in 1944.

“Everything that can be invented has been invented.” Charles H. Duell, Commissioner, U.S. Office of Patents, 1899.

Does anybody actually know anything?

It’s all about you and me Baby…

7 Apr

When you drain off all the fat, when you boil it all down, when you put it through a sieve and let the pointless and useless things fall through the mesh comes… everything comes down to one thing… FRIENDSHIP.

Art, Science, Learning, Family, Marriage, Money, Children, Sport, Health, Technology, Religion… whatever your passion of choice it is all utterly meaningless, a totally worthless dreck if it doesn’t set its foundations in the deep bonds of friendship.

Deathbed regrets are nearly always about relationships lost, not bank accounts unfilled, trips never taken, or dreams never satisfied…

Genuine Deep Friendship is the rare and valuable commodity that we are all searching for at the bottom of our soul. Dreams, wealth, achievement, family, faith and indeed love itself is only of value if it can be shared with another.

Friendship and Sharing can both exist on a superficial and even narcissistic level, but as we stumble crassly and awkwardly towards each other, even if our intentions are selfish, understand that the desire underneath all the crud is unadulterated and pure.

Friendship and Sharing… that’s what made Facebook and Twitter such a roaring success.

P:S: Yes… DRECK is a word…

Free from bullshit…

24 Mar

Keep things clean and simple.

Don’t be diluted or muddied by the agenda’s of others. Don’t try second guess yourself creatively. Try not to commit adultery, keep yourself sacred and keep your motives pure… this way you will have much more space in your life to listen and to create.

So much money, human resource and time is spent cleaning up a dirty house and making it presentable again.

Acting with integrity and creating art out of a truthful place, can seriously streamline both your career and your life. Loyalty follows integrity, and by living and creating this kind of life, you can use the internet to gather a faithful group of friends who will support you, treasure you and share your work with the world.

You don’t need a marketing department anymore… you just need a group of loyal and committed friends.

No ordinary bullshit…

17 Mar

When there is a lot of shouting it’s difficult to hear anything, if you’ve got a big voice maybe you’ll get heard but it’s almost impossible to get the sincerity of your message across. On the social networks (Twitter & Face-book) everyone is shouting about the product they each have to sell, and it can seem like no one is listening.

As in life, so it is in the crazy virtual playground in cyberspace, you need to find friends who are interested in genuine relationships.

It’s the quality of the friend, not the numbers of friends that really counts. You can know a billion people and still be lonely, or you could have just one or two close friends and feel like the richest dude in the world. It’s all about friendship, it doesn’t have to be deep but it’s got to be real.

Of-course you can keep on shouting but everyone’s talking ordinary old bullshit and that’s all you are ever likely to buy…

…good morning, thank you, good nite and a little bit of bumblebee sex…

The oldest things are now the rarest things on planet earth and hence they are also the most valuable. In big cities it is a “rare” and an extremely valuable thing to have someone look you in the eye and ask you how your day has been?

Likewise, simple manners, genuine interest in another person, and the ability to subvert ones own agenda and really listen are incredibly valuable commodities on the social networks. Lately I have been thinking of twitter as a rose garden where everybody is anxiously marking their own territory to such an extent that most of us have forgotten to stop and smell the glory in the roses.

We are so anxious about spreading our own message that we have lost sight and forgotten the true power in the social networks; they connect us, they allow us to communicate, to understand each other, to empower and to help. A bee must plunge deeply into the nectar of a flower if it wishes to pollinate, and pollination is essential for the production of seeds. So too we must deeply and sincerely connect with others, if we wish to build and grow mutually beneficial relationships.

P:S: I have expanded upon this on my social networking blog The Bullshit Revolution.

Bullshit leaves a nasty stain…

25 Feb

How do I make you believe something? By telling you the truth. Bullshit leaves a terrible stain, in breeds uncertainty not just in the other person, but also in you.

There is a story in the bible when Jesus meet a young man called Nathanael. Essentially he looks at Nathanael, right at him, right through him and says… “Here is a man about who nothing is false.”

Oh how I long to have the same thing said of me.  You don’t need to shout, coerce, control or manipulate when what you are saying is simply… true.

The death of the renaissance man

23 Dec

When Corporations took over the world in the last century something strange happened… the death of the Renaissance Man. When the Renaissance man died the “Specialists” became kings; Corporations are essentially a large gathering of “Specialists” each of whom are given to their own task or area of interest.

The Renaissance man, the person who was subject to no one, the person with a broad skill set, the person who was both creative and logical, spiritual yet realistic, artistic and yet scientific just didn’t fit inside the structure of a corporation. There was no cubicle inside a corporation for our Renaissance man to fit; no box on the Myers-Briggs personality chart for him to tick… so they put him in a different kind of box, he was obsolete, they buried him in that box… and in that box he died.

Think Issac Newton, Da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin… the very fabric of exploration wound through their DNA.

But corporations are dying now, because they haven’t just squashed creativity, they did something much worse… they have tried to manufacture it. Expression, real thoughts, deep questions that burn inside our anarchic souls cannot be restrained inside a cubicle anymore… instead they are buzzing, pulsing, burning all round us as the INTERNET gives birth once again to the Renaissance Man.

A little click can go a long way…

You help me a little… everyone helps me a lot!

28 Oct

We often don’t realize how much we can help each other, what a huge difference a little act of kindness or generosity can make.

This reality is amplified, when collective acts of kindness are multiplied exponentially together in the context of healthy community. If 10 of your closest friends simply smiled at you everyday, you would probably feel like a million dollars when your head hit the pillow every night.

It’s the constant encouragement and support from friends and blog readers that keeps me believing in my film-making journey, all those individual words of encouragement create a massive drive to succeed. Corporations, Coaches, Managers and Mentors are not a healthy necessity, what we really need is a community of friends; believing, helping and sharing life together. The Internet is an ideal vehicle for connecting all of us together; creating communities of nurture and support, that move beyond the screen into real relationships, real events, real projects and genuine encouragement and support.

Of course the reality is, many of us are tempted to remain isolated, to keep control and to make it on our own… which is why we don’t feel like a million dollars when our head hits the pillow each night.

So do you want to know the future…

27 Oct

Transmedia Storytelling is coming, and it is rushing towards us like a tidal wave.

Transmedia is the telling of a story across a variety of genres and platforms. This used to be a more difficult, because although several different platforms have existed for some time (Television drama, Documentary, Feature Film and Internet Video) accessibility, interactivity and sharing took too much effort. But the territory has shifted significantly in the past 3-4 years.

Bandwidth improvements, computer prices, and most importantly the huge growth of the social networks have connected filmmakers to their audiences and the audience members to each other, in a fashion that we have never experienced or seen before.

It’s a brave new world where an innate understanding of people and story will soon become Paramount (literally); the temptation for many will be to make it all about technology but nothing could be further from the truth… it will be all about people and relationships.
